Training Rules

Rene Portland enforced three rules during her 26 years coaching basketball at Penn State University-no drinking, no drugs and no lesbians.

Narrated by international swimming great Diana Nyad, Training Rules examines how a wealthy athletic department, enabled by the silence of a complacent university, allowed talented athletes, thought to be gay, to be dismissed from their college team.

In 2006, student athlete Jennifer Harris, with the National Center for Lesbian Rights, filed charges against Portland and Penn State for discrimination based on sexual orientation. The lawsuit inspired others whose lives were shattered during Coach Portland's reign to come forward. Their stories, explored in this heartfelt documentary by Academy Award nominee Dee Mosbacher and Fawn Yacker, expose both the damage inflicted by Portland and the triumphs of the women she sought to destroy.
