INTERNATIONAL FOCUS ON EAST ASIA

Following the success of last year’s Latin American Focus, we’re shifting our attention to East Asia, currently a hotbed for queer cinema. With China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea, we’re talking about 1.5 billion people, of which millions are dying to see themselves on the pink screen.

From mainstream works such as the runaway South Korean hit King and the Clown, to arthouse fare including I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone by Taiwanese genius Tsai Ming-liang, there is something for everyone in this trailblazing series.

The Festival will also include a special presentation of Wong Kar-Wai’s (Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love) masterpiece Happy Together, starring the late Chinese pop star Leslie Cheung, who came out despite the dangerous political landscape and the potential threat to his career.

Inside Out is proud to present Canadian premieres in this series, including the Berlin International Film Festival award winner Spider Lilies, which features two of Taiwan’s hottest female stars, Rainie Yang and Isabella Leong. Also making its Canadian debut is Leste Chen’s Eternal Summer, a pitch perfect film with exquisite cinematography you won’t soon forget.

This focus would not be possible without our guest curators Jeff Myers and Ethan Park who spent time in South Korea researching the best of East Asian shorts for the curated program, Hammered Down: East Asian Shorts.

We invite you on this whirlwind tour of East Asia, featuring diverse cinematic expressions from the region’s old and new generations of filmmakers.

THE OUTSIDERS

While Inside Out has always presented experimental and subversive works, there is now a designated sidebar titled, appropriately enough, The Outsiders.

Inside Out is taking risks and being frisky! From locally produced experimental porn (Peter Kingstone’s The Astounding Adventures of Strongman & Quickboy) to international art stars (Destricted’s Mathew Barney, Marina Abramovic, Sam Taylor-Wood and Larry Clark), we’re offering contemporary culture at its best. Are you up to the challenge?

We have the program Québec New Wave, featuring Canada’s first Dogme 95 film, Lonely Child and the shorts Vaguement romantique and Derniers mots.

In collaboration with Art Metropole and the Embassy of the Netherlands, we present the double-dutch launch of the queer underground magazines Butt and Girls Like Us featuring a fundraising party organized by none other than Will Munro and Paige Gratland and featuring a hot line-up of local and international djs and performers.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. We encourage moviegoers at this year’s festival to come join us on an adventure that we hope will become an Inside Out mainstay.

GUITLY PLEASURES

For those of you who want to kick back and watch hunky vampires and naughty alien lesbians, we help you filter through our program guide with a new designation: Guilty Pleasures.

Highly entertaining romps are on the menu, from a horror flick starring porn stars to the best of lezsploitation cinema. Even the most ardent film snobs won’t be able to resist the temptation!

The series will also feature queer cinema’s first sequel, Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds. This hilarious gag-filled romantic comedy will have you rolling in the aisles and begging for a third installment.

With queer television taking mainstream strides on channels like OutTV and here!tv, we’ve now got more entertaining options than ever before. So move over Will and Grace and make room for Dante’s Cove and The Lair. But these aren’t your run-of-the-mill sitcoms - gratuitous frontal nudity and over-the-top storylines will have you salivating for more than just popcorn.

So keep your eyes peeled for the Guilty Pleasures seal of approval and get your tickets fast, because these are guaranteed to sell out.
